SPIRAL THUNDER

Because Spiral Thunders are our musical strokes.

The summer of 2006 was the unfolding of great things for Davao’s metal scene. Clyde Mante, the band’s bassist, observed that the metal landscape in Davao city was full of bands which ran along the lines of extreme metal, death metal, black and thrash metal. He wanted to create a different kind of metal music, something that’s not as rough as the others that he observed. Something more melodic and focused on vocal harmony. He then recruited Gunny Libres, a former bandmate, as a rhythm guitarist, and then picked Nico De Leon to fill in of the band’s drummer slot.

Together, these three guys started to explore metal as a shared passion and they even started composing original tracks. However, they were a trio, just a trio, sans vocals, and they realized that they needed a high range vocalist for the genre of music that they wish to nurture: power metal.

It took them quite sometime to find the right man for vocal supply (four months) but then they were lucky to have landed with Lemmy Gutierrez, a vocalist who was introduced by a friend of Clyde’s. Lemmy was also the one who named the band “Spiral Thunder”, which was a reflection of how he viewed metal music should be: powerful but pleasing and harmonious. Of course, there’d be relative noise, which explains the thunder.

Come 2007, Voltaire Lopez filled in the lead guitarist position and he was also responsible for more fresh compositions. However, in 2008, Gunny left the band due to personal issues and then followed by Voltaire by end of 2008 because he also had schedule disputes with work and his other death metal band.

Spiral Thunder had a 5-month hiatus and then a guy named Benson Belmonte took over Gunny’s spot (rhythm guitarist). But then again, he was replaced by Ryan Chua due to the band’s assessment of musical contribution and team productivity issues.

Ryan Chua, a neoclassical/ progressive guitarist took charge of all the guitar parts of Spiral Thunder since mid- 2009.

2010 seems more promising for Spiral Thunder having Voltaire Lopez back in the band, became a more solid group as they are looking forward to re-record existing tracks and release a full length album. You may check them out via myspace--- www.myspace.com/spiralthunder.
